The packaging industry is making progress in defining its digital roadmap

Rosa Porta,

The BREF Digital Packaging project continues to move forward with new activities aimed at accelerating the digital transformation of the packaging sector in Catalonia.

Led by the Clúster Digital de Catalunya and the Packaging Cluster, the initiative seeks to analyze the impact of digital technologies on industrial packaging companies and to develop a sector reference document that inspires and guides strategic decision-making. The work focuses particularly on three key areas: artificial intelligence, traceability, and systems integration.

The project consortium includes the participation of Market AAD and the technology companies BertIA, TAI Smart Factory, and Zertifier, which contribute expertise in AI, Industry 4.0, sector dynamization, and digital verification/traceability.

Information session on the mission to Interpack 2026

On Wednesday, February 11, an online information session was held regarding the business mission to Interpack 2026, which will take place from May 7 to 13 in Düsseldorf.

This action is part of the BREF project’s technological benchmarking strategy, which includes participation in international trade fairs to identify trends and innovative solutions in digitalization applied to packaging. During the session, the objectives of the mission, the planned agenda, and the next steps for interested companies were presented. The mission will consist of a one-day program on May 12.

Companies interested or planning to attend Interpack can indicate their interest through this link.

Workshop with industrial packaging companies

The second action took place on Friday, February 14: a sector workshop with the participation of industrial companies such as Font Packaging, Quimovil, Copy Valls, Rotimpress Thinex, and Plasticband, together with the consortium’s technology companies.

The objective of the session was to analyze the real impact of digital technologies on production processes and gather input for the development of the project’s sector reports.

The discussion was structured around three main areas of specialization:

  • Artificial Intelligence (AI): Strong interest in applying AI to advanced analytics, data interpretation, operations, logistics, customer service, and decision-making. However, it was highlighted that data quality and integration must first be consolidated.

  • Traceability and data: A growing need for verifiable and integrated information, especially in light of the upcoming Digital Product Passport. Although companies work with data, it is often managed in a fragmented way.

  • Systems integration: While management areas (ERP, WMS) are more digitalized, production and planning still show room for improvement. The importance of defining a clear roadmap and promoting a cultural shift toward data-driven decision-making was emphasized.

Through these actions, the BREF Digital Packaging project strengthens its role as a strategic instrument to connect technology and industry and to provide the sector with a reference framework that facilitates structured, realistic, and competitive digital transformation.
